Senior R&D Manager

The Senior R&D Manager will motivate direct reports and peers to develop and deliver high quality products on time and under budget. Make risk-based decisions while interpreting sometimes inconclusive data; mentor and inspire a staff of creative engineers, supervisors, and technicians; influence change and drive a cross-functional team to make smart, data-driven technical decisions quickly.

Client is an early stage medical device company focused on the structural heart space.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

 R&D Organizational Management and Motivation (65%)

  • Manage and motivate an inventive staff of engineers, supervisors, and technicians, providing work direction, mentorship, and plans for employee development and fulfillment
  • Develop and implement best practices of medical device development, including data generation and analysis, ideation, prototyping, documentation, and testing.
  • Identify, find, develop, and retain key talent within the R&D organization.
  • Provide the R&D staff with the mindset and tools to enable data-driven risk taking and create a lean, fast-moving mentality around quality-driven design activity. 
  • Drive towards technical and design decision points through data generation, interpretation, and presentation.

Technical Leadership (35%)

  • Develop and manage design deliverables and requirements to ensure timely completion of product development objectives through experience, technical thinking, and a detail-oriented approach.
  • Work “in the trenches” within technical teams to provide product development, justification, and testing ideation, feedback, and support.
  • Lead various technical cross-functional teams to ensure objectives, resources, and timelines are clear and achievable.
  • Empower your team with rapid data generation techniques on design options as well as identifying test strategies to qualify products before release.

Required Skills

Minimum:

  • Bachelor of Science in an Engineering discipline
  • 12+ years of experience in the medical device field with product design, development, testing, etc.
  • 6+ years of people and project leadership and management experience
  • Driven mentality that can make progress and decisions leading to success of the broader organization
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong collaborative, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong influential personality and the ability to motivate and drive a team towards a goal
  • Demonstrated problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Proficient in statistical analysis
  • Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with MS Office Suite

Preferred:

  • Experience with catheter-based implantable devices
  • Experience with Class III implantable device development, specifically prosthetic heart valves
  • 2+ years in managing/supervising a staff of 5 or more engineers/technicians
  • 2+ years in technical project/program management
